Applications of Fused Magnesia in the Steel Industry
As Slag Conditioner
Fused magnesia is used in steelmaking processes involving BOF (basic oxygen furnaces) and EAF (electric arc furnaces). It serves to replenish MgO levels in the slag. Therefore, the slag composition can meet specific process requirements. Besides, this magnesite reduces the dissolution and erosion of magnesia-based refractory linings. Since steel mills vary in charging methods, dissolution requirements and particle size specifications, there are specific needs regarding the purity of the fused magnesia and the methods of application may differ.
As Raw Material for Magnesia Monolithic
Steel mills consume large quantities of magnesia repair materials, such as gunning mix, ramming mass and monolithic castable refractory. Consequently, many experienced steel mills formulate magnesia monolithic refractory products for the maintenance of furnace linings. Fused magnesia is utilized in the repair of linings for BOF, EAF, steel ladles, RH vacuum degassing units and tundishes.
