Types of Magnesia Spinel Brick
Magnesia spinel refractory bricks are available in two main series: magnesia alumina spinel bricks and magnesia iron (hercynite) spinel bricks. Since their technical parameters and performance characteristics differ, it is essential to choose the appropriate grade for your specific furnace application.

Applications of Magnesia Alumina Spinel Bricks
Rotary Kiln: Upper/lower transition zones, decomposition zone, and cooling zone (resistant to thermal shock and alkali attack).
Refining Ladle: Sidewall, bottom, and impact zone (resistant to slag corrosion and steel wash).
RH Degasser: Lower vessel and non-slag line linings.
Regenerator: Upper and middle checkerwork (resistant to alkali vapors and thermal cycling).
Copper/nickel smelting furnaces and hazardous waste incinerators.

Slight Color Differences Do Not Affect Brick Performance
While these visual variations occur naturally during magnesia spinel brick production, they are purely aesthetic and do not impact structural integrity. As long as physical and chemical properties meet quality standards, the bricks will deliver full service life and peak performance in your furnace.
Raw Material Impurities
Magnesia alumina spinel bricks are naturally light (off-white, light grey, light yellow-brown). Iron or titanium impurities cause minor color shifts. Higher purity gives a whiter color.
Magnesia-iron spinel bricks are naturally dark (dark brown, near-black). Iron is added on purpose. This gives them a deep brown or black color.
Kiln Atmosphere
Oxygen-rich firing: iron turns reddish-brown or yellow-brown.
Oxygen-poor firing: iron turns dark grey, green-brown, or black-brown.
Thick bricks may have a darker inside. This is called “black core.”
Firing Temperature & Time
Higher heat (1800°C) and longer firing improve crystal growth.
Small temperature differences in the kiln cause slight surface shade changes.
